Intermediate of Graphic Design - Project 1 Silent Sounds
Overview
This project explores typography and spatial form through the lens of John Cage’s 4:33, emphasizing the concept that "there is no such thing as silence." Using onomatopoeic words and marks, students are tasked with creating compositions that highlight the interplay between sound, silence, and typography.
Delivery
I drew inspiration for this project from a sunset visit to a park. Where the warm hues and tranquil atmosphere influenced the type placement in my accordion book. Subtle sounds, like cicadas buzzing and water droplets from a nearby fountain, shaped my interpretation of "silent sounds" and guided my creative choices. Careful attention was given to the composition to capture the essence of the setting, using scale, color contrast, and the interrelationships of marks and type to guide the viewer's journey through the book.
